What to Bring When Moving to Japan for the First Time
By Apollo Properties Osaka
Moving to Japan for the first time is an exciting adventure, but packing can feel overwhelming. Whether you're coming to study, work, or start a new chapter of life, having the right items with you can make the transition much smoother. Here are some essentials we recommend bringing when relocating to Japan.
1. Important Documents
Bring your passport (with visa), Certificate of Eligibility (if applicable), copies of important documents (ID, health insurance, school or work letters), and several passport-sized photos. It’s also helpful to have digital and printed copies in case of emergencies.
2. Clothing for All Seasons
Japan has four distinct seasons, especially in the Kansai area. Summers are hot and humid, while winters can be chilly. Bring layers, a warm coat for winter, and breathable clothes for summer. Don’t forget an umbrella or light raincoat—it rains often!
3. Shoes and Slippers
Comfortable walking shoes are essential. Also, bring slip-on shoes, as you'll often take off your shoes indoors. A pair of indoor slippers for your home or share house is also a good idea.
4. Medications and Toiletries
If you take prescription medication, bring enough to last a few months and a copy of your prescription. Some medications may not be available or legal in Japan. Familiar toiletries like deodorant or specific skincare products may be harder to find, so consider bringing a small supply.
5. Electronics and Adapters
Japan uses Type A/B plugs and 100V electricity. Bring plug adapters and make sure your electronics are compatible with the voltage. A pocket Wi-Fi or unlocked phone for a Japanese SIM card is also useful for staying connected.
6. Comfort Items from Home
Moving to a new country can be challenging, so bring a few small items that remind you of home—a favorite mug, photos, snacks, or anything that brings comfort.
7. Basic Japanese Phrases
Download a translation app or carry a phrasebook. Even a few basic Japanese phrases can go a long way in daily life and help you feel more connected to your new environment.
