Upcoming Autumn Events in Kansai: Things to Enjoy This Autumn

Autumn is one of the best times of year to explore the Kansai region. After the heat and humidity of the Osaka summer, temperatures gradually become more comfortable, making September, October and November perfect months for festivals, sightseeing and day trips.

For anyone newly living in Osaka, here are a few upcoming events worth adding to your calendar.

Tennoji Zoo Night Zoo – Osaka

From September 19 through October 25, Tennoji Zoo will hold its 2026 Night Zoo on selected dates. Located just a short trip from Namba and close to Shin-Sekai, the zoo is one of the easiest autumn outings for people living in central Osaka.

The Night Zoo offers a different experience from a normal daytime visit, with an opportunity to see the animals and zoo grounds after dark. It can also be combined with dinner or drinks in nearby Shin-Sekai.

Kobe Autumn Festival – October 3 & 4

Kobe makes an easy day trip from Osaka, and the Kobe Autumn Festival will take place on October 3 and 4 this year.

The festival spreads across Sannomiya, Kyomachi-suji and Kobe's waterfront area. Visitors can expect food trucks, local company booths and live entertainment. Roads in parts of central Kobe will also be closed for the festivities, creating a lively street-festival atmosphere.

Admission is free, making this a nice inexpensive weekend trip from Osaka.

Kobe Jazz Street – October 10 & 11

Music fans might want to return to Kobe the following weekend for Kobe Jazz Street.

The main festival takes place October 10 and 11 at several venues around the Kitano area and central Kobe. The event celebrates Kobe's long association with jazz, with performances taking place at clubs, halls and other venues around the city. Some outdoor venues offer free admission.

Jidai Matsuri – Kyoto, October 22

One of Kyoto's most impressive traditional festivals, the Jidai Matsuri, will be held on October 22.

Around 2,000 participants dressed in historical costumes take part in a procession representing different periods of Japanese history. The route runs from Kyoto Gyoen National Garden to Heian Jingu Shrine.

If you have recently moved to Japan and haven't experienced one of Kyoto's major traditional festivals, this is an excellent opportunity. Paid viewing seats are also available, including options with English or Chinese commentary.

Grand Sumo in Kyoto – October 16

Another interesting October day trip is the Grand Sumo Tournament at Kyoto City Gymnasium on October 16. It offers newcomers to Japan a chance to experience one of the country's most famous traditional sports without travelling all the way to Tokyo.

Kobe Minato Hanabi – October 19–23

Kobe's waterfront will also host the Minato Hanabi fireworks event from October 19 through October 23. Autumn fireworks are a little different from the huge summer festivals: cooler weather makes walking around the harbour considerably more pleasant.

Enjoy Autumn in Kansai

One of the great advantages of living in Osaka is just how much there is to experience within a short train ride. Kyoto, Kobe, Nara and other Kansai destinations are easy day trips, while Osaka itself has festivals and events almost every weekend.

As the weather cools and the autumn colours begin to appear, it's a great time to get outside, explore your new surroundings and discover a little more of what makes living in Kansai special.
