Surviving Your First Summer in Japan: What Every Expat Should Know

If you've recently moved to Japan, there's one season that catches many newcomers by surprise: summer. While Japan is famous for its beautiful cherry blossoms and colourful autumn leaves, the months of July through September can be a real challenge—especially if you're not prepared.

The first thing you'll notice is the humidity. Temperatures in Osaka regularly reach 35°C or higher, but it's often the humidity that makes the weather feel even hotter. Simply walking a few minutes to the station can leave you feeling sweaty, and it may take a few weeks for your body to adjust.

One of the biggest surprises for new residents is how important it is to stay hydrated. Convenience stores are everywhere, so take advantage of them by carrying a bottle of water or a sports drink. Drinks containing electrolytes, such as Pocari Sweat or Aquarius, are popular choices during the hottest months and can help replace minerals lost through perspiration.

Your apartment can also become extremely warm if left closed up all day. If your room has an air conditioner, don't be afraid to use it. Modern Japanese air conditioners are energy-efficient and can make a huge difference to your comfort and health. Using the dehumidifier (Dry) mode can often make the room feel cooler while using less electricity than full cooling.

Summer is also the season for insects. Mosquitoes are common, particularly near parks and rivers, so insect repellent is worth keeping on hand. You may also encounter the occasional cockroach, especially after heavy rain. Keeping your apartment clean, taking out rubbish on the correct collection days, and avoiding leaving food uncovered will help prevent unwanted visitors.

Despite the heat, summer is one of the most exciting times to experience Japan. Colourful festivals (matsuri), spectacular fireworks displays, beer gardens, and seasonal foods are everywhere. Many locals head out early in the morning or after sunset to enjoy outdoor activities while avoiding the strongest afternoon sun.

At Apollo Properties Osaka, we want every resident to enjoy their stay comfortably and safely. With a little preparation and a few local tips, you'll quickly adapt to Japan's unique summer climate and be ready to enjoy everything Osaka and the Kansai region have to offer.

Stay cool, stay hydrated, and make the most of your first Japanese summer!
