Japan’s rainy season (tsuyu), typically from early June to mid-July, brings high humidity, heavy rain—and unfortunately, a spike in insect activity. Whether you’re staying in one of our furnished apartments or a share house, it’s important to take a few simple steps to keep your living space clean, dry, and bug-free.
Ants, cockroaches, and fruit flies are attracted to food scraps and sugary residues. Always wipe down tables and countertops after cooking and eating. Store food in sealed containers, and don’t leave dirty dishes in the sink overnight.
Wet weather accelerates the breakdown of food waste, creating odors that attract bugs. Separate and dispose of garbage properly and follow the collection schedule in your neighborhood. Using garbage bags with strong seals or deodorizing agents helps too.
Moisture attracts insects—especially cockroaches. Use a dehumidifier or air conditioner to control humidity inside your room or apartment. Open windows when possible (with screens!) to allow airflow.
Citronella candles, mosquito coils, and plug-in repellents are widely available in Japan. You can also buy insect traps and sprays from any local drugstore or 100-yen shop.
Check for gaps around windows and doors. If needed, use weather stripping or tape to block small holes where insects might enter.
